THE NORVAL SOVEREIGN PRIZE

We are thrilled to announce that one of our artist, Amina Agueznay, has
won the prestigious Norval Sovereign Prize! An award that recognises the outstanding achievements and contributions of artist to the contemporary African art scene. From the 27 artists shortlisted this year representing 17 countries from across the African continent, Agueznay’s Portal #1 piece was what captivated the judges attention. The Soveriegn Art Foundation will be hosting an exhibition of Amina’s work: Portals #1. This particular piece was produced as part of series she developed while working with Salima Naji, leading workshops for local women from Tissekmoudine, Morocco. The women who participated in such workshops documented drawings of a variety of doors and their unique designs. These images were then transformed into woven tapistries made from wool. Amina interpreted the door designs in her own manner from alternative materials such as palm husk and leaves.
