Focus on - "Resilients" by Joana Choumali

29 June - 8 July 2020

Ivorian photographer Joana Choumali explains that "resilience is the ability to return to the original shape after being bent, compressed, or stretched. It is the ability to recover quickly in the face of adversity.

Through the Resilients series, the artist shows the portraits of African women dressed in the ornaments of their mothers and grandmothers as a means of reconnecting them with their ancestral past. Aware of their heritage, they participate in the transmission of a common memory and show that lineage is inextinguishable.

Through them, the artist shows us, Africa, as strong and proud of its traditions that were undermined by colonization. Resilient, she shows us that Africa has forgotten nothing of its past and continues to perpetuate its traditions.
